On Wednesday, Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf established a special committee to investigate the alleged audio leak from Najam Saqib, the son of former chief justice Saqib Nisar.
An official notification announcing Aslam Bhootani's appointment as chairman of the committee was issued by the National Assembly Secretariat.
Shahida Akhtar Ali, Muhammad Abu Bakr, Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Sheikh Rohale Asghar, Syed Hussain Tariq, Naz Baloch, Khalid Hussain Magsi, Wajiha Qamar, and Dr. Muhammad Afzal Khan Dhandla are some of the other members of the committee.
A "comprehensive investigation" will be carried out by the committee, and the NA will receive a report from it. In addition, the committee can request assistance from any investigation agency.
On social media, an audio recording purportedly made by the son of former chief justice Saqib Nisar discussing the distribution of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) election tickets in exchange for money led to the formation of the special committee.
A day earlier, the NA passed a motion calling for the establishment of a separate parliamentary committee to look into the alleged audio leak.
Shahida Akhtar Ali moved the motion, which called for the establishment of a special committee to interview the people who were speaking in the audio and conduct a forensic analysis of it. The movement further expressed that a researching organization ought to likewise direct an examination of the sound.
Ali demanded the chairman and other committee members be named by the speaker of the National Assembly during the session. She also requested specific guidelines for the committee's work and a time limit for completion.
After the leaked audio recording sparked controversy in the nation's politics, many called for an investigation into allegations of corruption against the former CJP Nisar and his son. This motion was passed. The PTI has stated that they will not tolerate any corruption within their party and has denied any involvement in the alleged ticket deal.
